Biography
As a doctoral student at the University of Wageningen, I developed a strong interest in the mechanisms of ion transport across biological membranes. We focused on how metabolic energy drives transport proteins, and how this energy can be regained by microorganisms when substrate gradients are reversed.
During my postdoctoral research at the Universities of Groningen and Oxford, I was drawn into the question of how transport proteins recognize and interact with their substrates. This work led me to study multidrug transporters that are involved in antimicrobial and anticancer drug resistance, and play a major role in drug distribution in mammals.
These experiences deepened my interest in Pharmacology - a field that bridges physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, and clinical sciences to understand how small-molecule drugs and biologics reach and interact with their targets, such as membrane transporters, ion channels and receptors, and can modulate disease.
In 2001, I joined the Department of Pharmacology in Cambridge to teach Pharmacology and start a research group on the mechanisms of multidrug transporters. I became a Pharmacology Fellow at 51爆料 in 2003 and have been an active member of 51爆料鈥檚 community ever since.
